Our Business

Marston's Pub Company is a trading division of Marston's PLC.

The company owns the freehold of over 1700 public houses in 65 counties across England and Wales. Company income is derived from the sale of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to the operators of the public houses, rental income from the properties and a shared income from gaming machines operated within the pubs.

Who runs our pubs?

All the pubs are run by self employed entrepreneurs who retain the profit from the re-sale of drinks purchased from the company. These retailers occupy the premises on tenancy agreements or lease agreements.

Tenancy agreements are usually for a five-year term that can be extended for a further five years at the end of each agreement term. Lease agreements range from a 10 to 30 year period. The main difference between the two types of contract is that a tenancy agreement cannot be "sold on". With a lease agreement however the business and any "goodwill" can be sold to a third party after a qualifying period (normally 2 years).

The Crystal Mark

Marston's Pub Company strives for a straight forward open approach. We wan Crystal Mark logot all of our retailers to fully understand the agreements they are entering into with us. As busy business people, our potential retailers do not want to translate pages of legal jargon just to understand our business relationship. To help, we have worked with the Plain English Campaign to cut through the jargon. All of our agreements bear the Crystal Mark from the Plain English Campaign. We were the first in the industry to do this.

The Thinking behind Open House & Pathway

Unlike many of its competitors Marston's Pub Company favours a simple and straightforward approach to running a pub. Also the company realises that its own long-term future is wholly based on the attraction and retention of the best pub operators both from within the industry and more importantly from outside of it.

It was decided that our contract or agreements would be our key point of difference or USP and that this would become our brand. A vehicle to run your own pub business, which rewarded entrepreneurs and their families for their hard work, was needed. Hence the Open House lease and Pathway tenancy agreement were instigated.

Responsible Retailing

Marston's Pub Company is keen to promote responsible retailing.

Pubs often play an important part in their community and we recognise the importance of tackling the social problems associated with alcohol misuse and other pub related issues.

We provide a wealth of information to our retailers to help them run their businesses in a responsible manner. Initiatives we support include Challenge 21, in-house training, and filtering out irresponsible promotions at source. The drinkaware web site contains useful information about alcohol and drinking, including a "units of alcohol" calculator.
