Remember, it's not what you do, but the way that you do it that really counts.

Have you realised your true potential yet? Are you working for someone else, but have the desire to make it on your own and build your own business?

Alternatively, you might be running a successful business in the retail, catering or service sectors. Whatever your background, the chances are you already have many of the skills required to run your own pub business.

More than 40% of our 1,700 retailers are people like you: they looked at their skills, decided they had what it took to take on a pub, invested their money wisely - and went for it. Marston's award-winning retailers are just like you. Remember, it's not what you do, but the way that you do it that really counts.

Andy Milton, licensee at the Carriers Inn, in Hatchmere, Cheshire, moved to the pub trade after spending more than 20 years in the airline, training cabin crew at Airtours.

Within just five months of owning his own pub business, Andy had picked up an award for major refurbishment of the pub.

"It's all about receiving the correct training and passing those skills on to your staff," says Andy.
"Combine that with a good attitude, an abundance of motivation, and sound product knowledge, and your business will be a success."

Laura took on the White Lion, in Barthomley near Crewe, Cheshire, in 2006 and after just one year she had transformed the village pub into the 2007 Marston's Pub of the Year.

She adds: "If you care about what you do, it will come across to your customers, whether they are children and their parents, or diners in your pub."

Howard now runs the George Hotel in Keswick. "My career in supermarkets had given me experience of working with the general public and managing people - the two most important aspects of my current job."
